The Midcentury Manor is located in the historic Paradise Palms neighborhood, the first Planned Community in Las Vegas and the brain child of infamous Vegas developer Irwin Molasky. In 1960 Molasky hired the architectural firm of Palmer & Krisel, famous for the mid-century look of Palm Springs, to build 300 homes around the then Stardust Golf Course, a favorite of the “Rat Pack.” Once completed, the community drew entertainers, mobsters and other members of the city’s social scene. Famous residents included Johnny Carson, Debbie Reynolds, Dionne Warwick, Phyllis Diller and Rip Taylor, just to name a few.

The Midcentury Manor was built in 1976 and is the former residence of Jay Sarno, a Las Vegas Hotel Developer and Casino Boss who envisioned and constructed the first two themed mega resort casinos in Las Vegas, Caesars Palace and Circus Circus. He is credited with creating the iconic theme park look of The Las Vegas Strip today.

Although never directly linked to “organized crime,” Sarno borrowed funds through Jimmy Hoffa from The Teamster Retirement Fund to finance construction on his casinos. As a result he was under the constant scrutiny of the Nevada Gaming Commission and had hits out on him from time to time by the mob. You will notice The Manor has no windows facing the street.

Jay Sarno was a colorful character, passionate about entertainment, food, drinking, gambling, golfing and all the pleasures Las Vegas had to offer. His best friend and gambling partner, Evel Knievel, famously attempted to jump the fountains at Caesars Palace in 1967. Sarno was instrumental in getting the James Bond film, Diamonds Are Forever, shot in Vegas in 1971 and has a cameo appearance in the film.

In 2016 the home was purchased by your hosts, Dale and JR. They were the first couple married in the Midcentury Manor Garden.
